DA candidate botched cases, complaints say

HARRISBURG — The state House of Representatives and Senate are both scheduled to hold unusual sessions later this weekend as lawmakers scramble to finish up a fiscal-year budget and other important bills. Lawmakers were expected to start their Sunday sessions this afternoon.

Wisconsin Supreme Court: Prosser ahead by 7316 in final tally

A statewide canvass of vote totals of the state's 72 counties finalized Friday afternoon has Prosser beating Kloppenburg, an assistant attorney general, by 7,316 votes. The final canvass was completed 10 days after the election.

The deadline for calling for a recount is 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The margin is within the limit that would allow Kloppenburg to request a free, statewide recount.

“We appreciate the diligent and meticulous work of municipal and county election officials in completing their official canvass reports. Close elections always bring greater scrutiny of each step of the process, and local election officials have performed professionally and efficiently during the official canvass. We will continue to review the canvass reports and certify the official statewide results when that review is complete and when we know whether a recount is requested. That decision is now in the hands of the candidates.”

As I have said in the past , I don't think anything fraudulent occurred with the vote totals in Waukesha County  However, it would still be a good idea for Kloppenburg to request a recount in at least Waukesha County, and probably statewide. It is paramount that as much doubt be erased about the outcome of this election, and indeed all elections, as possible.

There remains a chronic voter turnout problem in American politics. The specter of stolen elections, even if based on faulty and / or flimsy information, only exacerbates that civic illness. Faith in the process is absolutely worth the cost of a recount.
