Letters: Intent makes all the difference in border crossing

The June 20 letter "Just shoot border-crossers?" compares apples to atomic bombs in suggesting the United States defend its borders the same way Israel does. Please examine the concept of "intent."

The majority of those crossing our borders illegally are doing so to find work, and the ability to care for and educate their children We would appreciate their intent more if they would do this in a legal manner, as probably the letter-writer's antecedents and mine did.

Those calling themselves Palestinians (some were not) were breaking down protective fencing in a continuation of the 60-plus years of attempting to destroy Israel. It had nothing to do with the "Arab Spring," which is a revolt against the oppression of the Arab regimes against their own people.

When I saw the pictures, my first thought was that they were trying to break into democratic Israel where Arab citizens vote, have their elected representatives in the Parliament, and, amazingly, can speak out against the Israeli government freely if they so wish.

I would ask the letter-writer: If someone comes to your door and asks for a job, and someone else comes to your door with a loaded gun ready to shoot, could you compare these as equal intentions? Or would you see the difference, the reality, give warning, and then take the appropriate defensive action?

Israel had every right to use force vs. Syrian provocateurs

The Post published a letter under the headline "Just shoot border-crossers?" in which the writer used a twisted argument about the shootings of Syrian "protesters" at the Syrian-Israeli border. He compared illegal Mexican infiltration at the U.S. border with the deliberate border provocation by one hostile country against its peaceful neighbor. Last I heard, Mexico and the U.S. were not at war.

Syria has never made peace with Israel. Those so-called "peaceful protesters" were bused to the border by the Assad regime and deliberately encouraged to cross the barbed-wire protected border. Israeli troops warned them repeatedly, in Arabic, to stay away . When that command was ignored, they then fired over the heads of the "peaceful protesters." When that, too, failed to stop them, they aimed at their legs. There are stories that the Syrian plainclothes "minders" who accompanied and directed them shot some who tried to turn back toward Syria.
