Puppet Monster Massacre (2011) movie review |

Is a low (no) budget indie movie that will most assuredly become a cult classic in the not-too-distant future.

1985, it’s a dark night in the wilderness and a hunter is out hunting game when he comes across a penguin. After short dialogue the penguin puts a whoopin on the hunter and knocks him out. We then see a dark figure in the mist. When the hunter awakens we find him tied up in an unknown room and a voice starts to speak. The mysterious character informs the hunter that he was implanted with a monster embryo . . . to a gory conclusion.

After the credits, we are introduced to Charlie and his very foul mouthed grandpa. It seems that Charlie received a letter saying that if he (and others) is able to spend an entire night in the infamous and eerie Wagner Mansion he would win a million dollars; Grandpa immediately warns him to stay away. After a few scenes introducing other characters, we find that Charlie wants to impress his friend Gwen (who was also invited) so he decides to go for the money. As the guests arrive and settle in we see that the host, Dr. Wolfgang Wagner, is one and the same as the shadowy character from the intro scene. As the night moves on, the guests find themselves in precarious situations as ‘the monster’ that we were introduced to earlier is set loose in the mansion.

This movie is ridiculous, but in its ridiculousness (and simplicity) lays its genius. The inspiration for this film is fun, campy 80’s horror; Dustin Mills is a huge fan of the horror movies of that era and it shows with all kinds of subtle references. PMM . While the story is pretty straight forward and cliche, the hook of the film is the interaction between the puppets and vocal acting. There is a sub-plot that some might consider distasteful for a horror comedy, but the movie never becomes derogatory and without spoilers let me just say that things play out the right way.

The acting is obviously relative, but really good none the less. The vocal acting, along with the look of the puppets, is central to making this movie work, and it’s pulled off very well. Each character has a strong sense of identity and Dr. Wagner is a perfect example of this. An obvious standout is ‘Raimi Campbell’, one of the guests and a pervert as well as a horror movie geek . . . just don’t get too fond of him.

The dialogue is smart if at times vulgar. The jokes never stop.
