Calm at the Eye of the Storm (Video)
Mrs. Cohn sat serenely in her Falls Village home recently, as her three children and several of their friends negotiated over what to do on a hot summer evening—they ultimately chose a dip in the backyard pool—and five dogs barked, bayed or made their presence known in other ways. Amazingly, within minutes, the tumult subsided, and Mrs. Cohn was left sitting alone with a visitor and her daughter’s snoozing Chihuahua quiet on her lap. Metaphorically speaking, Mrs. Cohn’s days are in a similar whirl. She oversees her busy household by herself at least half the time while her husband, Doug, who sells high-end wine glasses, is on the road. “I preferred it when he sold wine, and I had cases of wine in the garage,” she said with a smile. “Now, all I have is cases of empty glasses.” “My mom grew up about half a mile from this house, on Battle Hill,” she related. Several generations of her family acted as postmasters in the Falls Village post office, a fact that had a straitening influence on her young life. “I couldn’t get away with anything,” Mrs. Cohn said. “In a town this size, if your mother works in the post office, she knows everything you do.” And then there are the pets, a never-ending cavalcade of the lost and abused. Some find a home with the Cohns; others are fostered until permanent homes can be located. “I realize I can’t take any more [permanently],” Mrs. Cohn said, “because I wouldn’t be able to give them the attention they need. That is why we built kennels in the garage, so I can foster some until we find them other homes.” Josie, the Chihuahua, is a Southern dog, brought up North as a rescue when the oldest Cohn child, Emma, wanted a pet of that breed. Dora, a mixed breed of indeterminate heritage, came home as a puppy in a carry-on bag after Mrs. Cohn’s visit to the Caribbean island of Anguilla, while poor, shy Andy is a rescue dog once so insecure she feared to let him go elsewhere. Guido, a coon hound mix who “sings,” opted for destructive behavior anytime he stood on the brink of adoption, and Madeline, a bloodhound, rounds out the household. The kennels are temporarily empty, but one senses this will not be true for long. Mrs. Cohn has worked regularly with Companion Pet Rescue, founded in Georgia by Meredith McGraw.Kennels In Hilton Head - News
When she was grown and married, she and her husband moved to Hilton Head, NC, where her job took her. But, as she was pregnant with her first child and unimpressed with the local school system, they soon opted to move back North.
On a visit to the shelter last week, half the kennels on the adoption floor were occupied by at least one Chihuahua – or a Chihuahua mix. Torres said he rarely gets calls complaining of violent Chihuahuas; most calls are from exasperated owners.

The prosecutor says numerous pit bulls were found in kennels in the backyard of the home. She adds that some of the animals had fresh wounds, apparently from recent fights. Marlon Bernier was held on $25000 bail following his Friday arraignment.
One of the board's strongest dissenters to the motion was Daniel Francati, president of the Daytona Beach Kennel Club, who called the proceedings a "lynch mob." Francati, one of six new members appointed to the HAAA board this year, said he was worried
Hilton Head Island Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show
German Wirehair Pointer is Best in Show
The Hilton Head Island Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show was held March 5 and 6 at Honey Horn Plantation , Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The Best in Show on March 5 was Truman, a three-year old German Wirehair Pointer pictured above with acclaimed American Kennel Club Professional Dog Handler Frank Murphy of Anderson, South Carolina.
Murphy, clearly excited after the victory said that he had shown Truman’s father Scout for the last two years, that Scout had won 48 times at Eukanuba and that the previous record was 29! Mr. Murphy said that he has been coming to the Hilton Head show for the last 10-15 years and that he loves the Hilton Head show and that, “this is the way dog shows used to be, in a pretty park and everybody had a good time.”
The Hilton Head Show Format
The show’s format is just like Westminster, with American Kennel Club judges and stewards. The dogs compete for points first within their breed to determine the best specimen of the breed. The winner of the breed competes in one of the seven groups. The first place winners of each group then compete for Best in Show. The best in show winner gets a point for every dog that is there. “This is our 15th year of dog shows” said Don Brown, the President of the Hilton Head Kennel Club . We are pleased that the participation of dogs in our event this year is up by 20% over last year to 739 dogs! We are so grateful that we have great community support with advertisers in our catalog and we have great vendors that include homemade cookies and homemade ice cream and local barbeque from Ridgeland.
In addition to the dog show there is a canine good citizenship event and you don’t have to have an AKC registered dog to participate. Anyone can bring their pet and they do things and get a degree of achievement. We’ve had the event for about 4 years and the entry fee is only $5. At noon today, under the large live oak tree we had the blessing of the animals by an Episcopal Priest, the second year that we have done that.
