, They have received solid local (Sacramento) air play, were named “Band of the Week” in High Times Magazine in 2009, have appeared in Relix Magazine, were on the front page of the Sacramento Bee, and earned a Sammies Award (Sacramento Area Music Awards) in 2010 for the Reggae/Jam/Roots Band division. It was also a great honor and stoke for them when one of their tracks was included on a compilation CD alongside the band Further, which includes members of Grateful Dead.They have also attracted a handful of sponsors, including Sudwerk Brewery, Silver Surfer Vaporizer, and the South Bay’s very own Hippy Tree Clothing.
They’ve toured extensively along the west coast of California and Oregon, and have participated in numerous music festivals – including the Whole Earth Festival and Bobolink. Along the way they’ve shared the bill with such notables as The Dirty Heads, Mother Hips, Orgone, Iration, Zion I, Rehab, The Brody’s, and the South Bay-based bands B Foundation and Tomorrows Bad Seeds.
ZuhG has been so active they even opened their own ZuhG Life store in their hometown of Sacramento. It’s essentially an independent music store, as well as a hub for local artists and California-based clothing manufacturers to sell their craft – including Hippy Tree. Their refuge even offers music lessons for the local artiste.
Following the release of their second album Life is “a roller coaster ride full of musical genres and jams!” And as for its heart, he says, “Free love can mean a lot of different things… to us and for this album it means love is free… we should all enjoy each other’s company, respect people, be happy, and love each other.”
And as if you could expect ZuhG to sit still.
“We’re going to start working on our next full length soon,” shares Nichols.

Erich Hornung , one of the architects of the Plaza, is teaming up with John Mortensen ,and Eva Di Orio of The Soft Machine Gallery , along with over 21 artists to multiply their impact and do their part for the Plaza. This Saturday, August 6th, from 6-11pm they will host a Phase 2 Benefit Art Show . The show will revolve around dozens of artists using skateboards as their canvas.
The Soft Machine Gallery in Allentown is owned by John Mortensen and Eva Di Orio . They are helping build the new art scene in the Valley. This is a great chance to stop by and check them out as well help the Plaza. Not to mention get yourself some original art by artist that use the Plaza right along next to you.
One of the most popular questions I hear at the shop regarding the Bethlehem Skateplaza is, “When is the next phase being built?”. I usually explain the importance of the Buy A Brick program, the HelloBase video contest , and tell them it’s up to all of us to do our part.
Your part could be as basic as helping keep the Plaza clean and safe. Perhaps, your part is asking your parents, your grandparents, your neighbors , anyone that will listen, to buy a brick also. There are even people that take it upon themselves to really step it up for the Plaza, Like Dan Welch , who created a raffle with Homebase to multiply his donation.
Erich , The Soft Machine Gallery , and All of the Artists involved are taking it to another level to help the Plaza together. Erich explains, “ The all ages art show will be an evening to create awareness of the progress of the skateplaza but more importantly to raise money for the subsequent phases. This will be achieved through a silent auction, which means the art piece will be sold to the highest bidder.
