Founder's Day brings dignitaries old, new
Sunday June 19, 2011BENNINGTON -- The 250th anniversary of the first settlers' arrival in Bennington was marked with a daylong slate of activities in Old Bennington on Saturday.
The Bennington Historical Society organized the "Founder's Day" celebrations, which included educational programs, reenactments, and appearances by two governors. If you guessed Peter Shumlin and Jim Douglas -- you're only half right.
The day's activities began in the morning at the Old First Church with an opening ceremony featuring historical society volunteers and Bennington Select Board Chairman Joe Krawczyk.
"This is where it all began some 250 years ago," said Krawczyk. "I often wondered growing up in Bennington what it was like back then. I also wonder what it will look like in just a few years from now ... One of the things I hope we all do as a community of Bennington ... is to appreciate the historical significance of this town."
Saturday's activities drew a mixture of Bennington locals and out-of-staters, according to Ken Walling, chairman of the Founder's Day committee. "We had good turnout, a lot of activity, and people enjoyed themselves," he said.
Early in the day, Walling gave presentations at the Old First Church with an overview of Bennington's early history from 1761 onward. In the adjacent cemetery, Anne Bugbee lead tours with featured grave sites including five past Vermont governors; early settlers James Breakenridge, Jedediah Dewey, and Bridget Harwood; and C. C. Jones, who died on the Titanic.
During an afternoon ceremony at the Battle Monument, Rep. Mary Morrissey presented a house resolution proclaiming June 18, 2011, to be Founder's Day in Bennington. Joining her at the podium were Reps. Timothy Corcoran, Brian Campion, and Anne Mook, and Sens. Bob Hartwell and Richard Sears. Rep. Alice Miller was also in attendance.
Following, Walling introduced the two guest governors present on the monument green. Walling welcomed Shumlin and -- "brought out of retirement after 250 years" -- Benning Wentworth. Wentworth spoke first offering a few words of advice to the sitting Governor.
"Acquire land, gratis if you can, and then sell it for a good price," advised Wentworth. "Treat your friends and family well -- but not too well so as to lose favor with the public." Wentworth said that he had been told Shumlin to be "a man of great acumen and perspicacity.

A crossover country star named Roger Miller crooned the pop lyrics: England swings like a pendulum do. Miller also sang that you can't roller skate in a buffalo herd, so he clearly had a firm grip on the steering wheel of the USS Obvious.

To post a message, it costs you a point. If you have a question, then a couple of bucks is a small amount to have your questions answered. However, without incentive people will not answer questions (because it would also cost to post responses/experiences). So, lets say I post a response to your question, then if you (or any member who posted before me) thinks that my response was useful, and adds value to that thread, can give me a "+" which adds to my chunk of points. Engineers, computer programmers, and tech workers aren't known for outspoken collective action and political protest. But on July 14, up to 1,000 high-skilled, legal immigrants will gather in San Jose, Calif., to express their outrage at the U.S. government's failure to deliver on a promise to hasten the processing of their green-card applications. Many of these immigrants came to the U.S. from India on visas and have been stuck in what they say is an interminable wait for permanent residency and the freedoms it brings. "We're stepping out to bring this issue to the attention of lawmakers and the public," says Ashish Sharma, 37, who has worked as a manager at a tech firm in Los Angeles for seven years, awaiting his green card. "The debate has been dominated by illegal immigration, but we want to put a spotlight on the hurdles we're facing as a hard-working and law-abiding group. It's time for corrective action." Sharma says he spent $5,000 flying his wife and children to the U.S. from India to prepare green-card documents that the government originally said it would accept and then later decided not to accept. Tomorrow, he will drive more than five hours to San Jose to meet hundreds of others stuck in the green-card backlog who want to make a public statement about their frustrations. The rally follows a symbolic action on July 10 in which hundreds of green-card applicants sent flowers to the director of U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services in a show of peaceful protest reminiscent of Mohandas Gandhi's nonviolent campaign against British rule before India gained independence in 1947. The idea for both the flower sending and the rally emerged from Immigration Voice, a group that advocates for high-tech immigrants in the U.S. on visas. The Gandhi protests, though grounded in years of frustration and anger, were sparked by recent events. On June 12, the U.S. State Dept.
