Virgin Media warns users of SpyEye Trojan attack

Virgin Media has alerted 1,500 of its broadband customers that their computers have been infected with the SpyEye Trojan.

The alert comes as part of Virgin Media's security initiative, launched in 2010, to help protect broadband customers from malicious internet malware.

A Trojan – so named after the famed Trojan Horse – is a malicious program that gets into your computer by disguising itself as something else, such as an image file, a music file or a screensaver.

Clicking on such a file to open it will run the Trojan's hidden program instead, and potentially give the hacker access to personal information - such as banking details - on your computer.

The attack by the dangerous SpyEye trojan was detected in collaboration with the Serious Organised Crime Agency, which Virgin Media has been working with as part of its security initiative. 

Virgin Media says it has written to the infected customers on its network to alert them to the danger and offer them practical advice on how to deal with the removal of the trojan. 

Virgin Media has revealed that a quarter of customers that contact it for support either have no computer protection or do not keep their security software up to date.
