Competitive accounting

THE Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Sunway-TES, a subsidiary of Sunway University, are organising a nationwide accounting quiz competition known as “ACCA Sunway-TES Accounting Challenge 2011” for all Chinese Independent Schools in Malaysia.

The accounting quiz, introduced two years ago, aims at promoting interest in the field of accountancy and finance among Chinese-language school students.

“Accountancy is an attractive career option; especially for those who want to move up the corporate ladder and seek global mobility.

“The global demand for accounting talent is increasing, post-crisis, as companies begin to hire accounting professionals, not just for the finance function, but for leadership positions in their businesses,” says ACCA Malaysia country head Jennifer Lopez.

The quiz, she adds, aims to provide students with the opportunity to apply accounting principles in real world situations,” she says.

Sunway-TES executive director Teo Ee Sing says there has been good response to the quiz.

“There is a growing interest from schools to be part of the competition especially since the winning teams will be awarded scholarships to study ACCA in Sunway-TES.

“We hope that more schools will take part in the competition this year,” Teo adds.

The quiz is open to all Senior Middle 2 and Senior Middle 3 accounting students of Chinese Independent schoolS, and will be based on ACCA’s Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) syllabus of Paper FA1 (Recording Financial Transactions) and Paper FA2 (Maintaining Financial Records).

To date, 19 schools in Peninsular Malaysia and 12 schools from Sabah and Sarawak have confirmed participation.

The winning team from East Malaysia will compete with the winner from Peninsular Malaysia at the grand finals to be held at Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa on July 30.

The winning team will receive trophies and scholarships worth more than RM125,000 to pursue the ACCA programme at Sunway University or Sunway College Kuching.

Meanwhile, Sunway-TES recently signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Hanoi University to offer full-time ACCA programmes in Vietnam.

Under the agreement, Sunway-TES and Hanoi University will offer the Foundation in Accountancy, ACCA Qualification and BSc (Hons) Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University (OBU) on a full-time basis at Hanoi University, Vietnam.
