TRIATHLON

One dies swimming, one critical at NYC Triathlon

One person died and another was in critical condition after they had trouble during the swimming portion of the Nautica New York City Triathlon.

New York City police said Michael Kudryk, 64, of Freehold, N.J., was pulled out of the Hudson River unconscious near 79th Street at 7:45 a.m. Sunday and was believed to have suffered a heart attack. He was taken to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A 40-year-old woman from Elmhurst, Ill., also was taken to St. Luke's in critical condition with heart attack symptoms, police said. Her name was not immediately available.

Police said 26 others were removed from the water needing assistance for minor injuries or pains throughout the swim, which was the first portion of the triathlon. Race director Bill Burke said there were more than 3,000 participants this year.

The police said there was no indication of a link to a sewage spill into the Hudson River last month. The river was closed for recreational use temporarily due to health concerns but has since reopened.

Participants in the yearly race swim about a mile, bike 25 miles and run 6 miles.

HORSE RACING

BREEDERS' STAKES: Luis Contreras rode Pender Harbour to a victory by a nose in the $500,000 Breeders' Stakes turf race at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto. Contreras became the first jockey to win all three Canadian Triple Crown events with two horses.

Pender Harbour, the 2-1 favorite, held off Celtic Conviction to win the 11/2-mile race on soft turf in 2:36.1.

Contreras also captured the Queen's Plate aboard Inglorious before adding the Prince of Wales Stakes and Breeders' Stakes events with Pender Harbour.

Celtic Conviction finished second but was relegated to third for interfering with third-place finisher Crown's Path. Crown's Path was bumped up to second.

TENNIS

LEGG MASON CLASSIC: Unseeded Radek Stepanek won his first ATP title in 21/2 years by upsetting top-seeded Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-4 in Washington.

MERCURY INSURANCE OPEN: Agnieszka Radwanska won her first tournament in more than three years with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over third-ranked Vera Zvonareva in Carlsbad, Calif.

VENUS WITHDRAWS: Venus Williams withdrew from the Rogers Cup in Toronto because of an illness.

About one in four of the nearly 7,400 elected representatives across the country do not possess a four-year college degree, according to a report released Sunday evening by The Chronicle of Higher Education in Washington. That compares with 6 percent of members of Congress, and 72 percent of adults nationwide, said the report, which is based primarily on the officials’ self-reported biographical information.  (Hu, The New York Times) As states across the country look for ways to trim billions off their spending on Medicaid, New Jersey is garnering particular attention for a proposal that opponents characterize as an unprecedented and draconian attempt to balance the state’s precarious budget on the backs of society’s most vulnerable populations.  (The Associated Press) With virtually no support from the Assembly Democratic majority for a compromise plan by Gov. Chris Christie and Senate President Stephen M. Sweeney to make New Jersey’s 500,000 public employees pay more for their health and pension benefits, Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver (D-Essex) on Friday offered her own proposal.  (Hester, New Jersey Newsroom) Mayor Lorenzo Langford, strategically located by the door, has formed a one-man receiving line at the front of the packed city council meeting room. If you want to get out, and dozens are trying, you must scoot past him — and that’s not easy: Langford is stopping more people than a security checkpoint at the New Meadowlands Stadium.  (Manahan, The Star-Ledger) Wake-Up Call Morning News Digest: June 24, 2011
