Triple-digit temperatures expected this week in Las Vegas
Sunny skies and temperatures climbing into only the 90s are in the forecast for Las Vegas today as spring comes to a close.
But triple-digit temperatures will make a return to the area on Tuesday, the first day of summer, as an area of high pressure along the West Coast begins to move inland today, according to the National Weather Service.
The high pressure will become stronger over the western states Tuesday and Wednesday, sending high temperatures up 10 to 15 degrees across most of the region by the middle of the week, the weather service said.
Temperatures in the valley are expected to reach afternoon highs of 103 degrees Tuesday, 108 Wednesday, 109 Thursday and 105 Friday, forecasters say.
At 5:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 72 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 74 degrees. The record low was 53 degrees, set in 1939.
Around the valley just before 6 a.m., temperatures were 72 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 74 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 69 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.
Temperatures in the valley were to rise today to 82 degrees by 9 a.m., to 90 degrees by noon and reach a high of 96 degrees by 4 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 101 degrees and the record high was 113 degrees, set in 1961 and 1940.
Temperatures are expected to drop to 95 degrees by 6 p.m., to 89 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 85 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.
Tuesday's morning low will be 77 degrees and Tuesday's high will climb to 103 degrees, they said.
