Beilue: Similar challenges found a world apart
BOYS RANCH - Jason McDonald was among 50 or so in line Monday evening under the awning and shade trees near the entrance of Boys Ranch to eat some chuck wagon grub of chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes, beans, biscuits and cobbler.
"So, this is what they used to pull across America in the cowboy days?" he said, pointing to the chuck wagon.
"Oh, yeah," said David Hanzlick of the Boys Ranch staff. "Bad job too. One of the worst jobs you could have on the trail."
McDonald - "just like the hamburger shop," he said - can be excused if he's no expert on John Wayne movies. He works for Child Protective Services in New South Wales, Australia.
He was among two groups at Boys Ranch that were geographically a world apart and philosophically side by side. The ranch is hosting two groups, 16 from Australia, 12 from Germany. A total of 28 - 16 of them at-risk youth - traveled a combined 15,000 miles to exchange ideas, learn new ones, and expose themselves to new challenges not found in their home countries.
"We sort of give them the Cal Farley version of what we do, some core philosophies and show how we apply them," said Mark Strother, chief operating officer at Boys Ranch. "It's helping kids find particular skills and develop a mastery of them. It's allowing the kids opportunities for independence and generosity and a sense of adventure, and how we use adventure to meet those areas."
Beate Kreisle and two staffers brought all nine children from Jugend-Volleg am See, which is translated as "Youth College By the Lake." Living in a small cramped house in Moos, in southern Germany, it's a far cry from 72-year-old Boys Ranch, where 260 children on 800 on-campus acres call home.
"It's very big here. I really like it. You put things in your potatoes we don't," said Benjamin Ricourt, 20, from Moos. "We all understand each other, like a big family."
But no matter if it's Europe or Down Under, they all share the same issues - overcoming behavior problems and fractured families which spark lack of trust of others, lack of self-esteem, lack of confidence.
"We want them to do more than they think they can do," said Kreisle, who has been to the ranch three times in the last six years. "We try to get them to develop trust and go beyond the frontiers they've set for themselves, try something new and be open to the choices life gives you. Too often they lock themselves in mental cages and don't develop what they have.
